April 11 marked eight years since then-President Laurent Gbagbo was captured by Ivoirian and French military forces. Gbagbo’s capture in 2011 and subsequent transfer to the International Criminal Court at The Hague for prosecution on war crimes charges brought an end to the country’s civil war and paved the way for Alassane Ouattara, Gbagbo’s prime challenger in the country’s controversial presidential election held in late 2010, to move into the West African country’s top political office.
