Prime Minister Bruno Tshibala of the Democratic Republic of the Congo proposed that a new tax is levied on the country’s mining sector so that sufficient resources may be generated to underwrite efforts to develop and diversify the Congolese economy. Tshibala’s proposal is consistent with other calls in the Congo for the strategic development of the national economy, with only a question of whether funding comes from existing mining sector-generated revenues or from the introduction of another new levy.
