Democratic Republic of the Congo: state legitimization of Tshisekedi as president

Félix Tshisekedi, of the opposition Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS), was validated the president-elect of the Democratic Republic of the Congo by the country’s Constitutional Court and, just as importantly, the regional political body the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The Constitutional Court ruling made on January 20 affirmed the provisional results released by the Congo’s independent electoral commission ten day’s prior declaring that Tshisekedi won roughly 39% of the presidential vote, against runner up Martin Fayulu of the rival opposition Lamuka alliance, who tallied about 35% of the vote.
