Democratic Republic of the Congo: sustaining the Mining Code

Democratic Republic of the Congo presidential chief of staff Vital Kamerhe met March 12 with leaders of the country’s mining sector in the mining city of Kolwezi. Kamerhe stated a mining conference will be soon held, preferably in Kolwezi, that will bring together mining companies, government officials, and civil society representatives to promote support for and the development of the country’s mining industry. Kamerhe added, notably, that there won’t be any discussion of the country’s revised Mining Code. Kamerhe’s address in Kolwezi may mark the Congo government’s first stated position on the Mining Code that was revised, controversially, in 2018. …
