Mauritania: selecting regime continuity post-Aziz

Mauritania government spokesman Sidi Mohamed Ould Maham announced January 29 that Defense Minister Mohamed Ould El Ghazouani was selected as the ruling Union for the Republic (UPR) party candidate to stand in the country’s upcoming presidential election. The selection of Ghazouani to succeed incumbent President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz when elections are held by June 21 means continuity of regime security and stability at a time of rising geopolitical outlook for Mauritania.
